The Home Diaries is an ongoing photography project I've been developing this summer. One of my goals going into this summer was to capture more candid moments of life at home. Being gone at college for so long made me realize how precious the simple moments at home are when we're all just living life together. We often overlook the beauty in the mundane and usual because we're so used to it. Moving to college and back has helped me to re-notice all of the usualness of life on both ends, and I've found that there's always magic in the mundane if you look for it.
I started chronicling these moments on the day that I left Savannah in May until the day that I flew back in August, and having the intention of candidly capturing memories helped me to actually use my photography to stay present in the moment. Often I find myself wanting to get the perfect shot of a candid moment and then missing the real thing because I was so focused on executing a photo, but through this project I learned to capture life exactly as I saw it, and usually that composition was far more beautiful than the perfectly planned one I had in my head.
While it's not a huge collection of photos, these moments cover everything from mundane moments around the house to special adventures with friends and family. This ongoing project helped me to make sense of the zeitgeists of this summer without losing the magic of the moment. These photos and the people in them are now eternally special to me. Enjoy "The Home Diaries".
